Study in Canada: Your 5-Step Guide to Getting a Student Visa

1446

If you want to study in Canada, you will need to get a Canadian study permit, also known as a student visa. With top-ranked universities, a high quality of life, and post-graduation work opportunities, Canada is an increasingly popular study destination for international students. Follow this 5-step guide to successfully apply for your Canadian study permit.

Step 1: Choose Your School and Program

With over 90 universities and 200,000 international students, Canada offers a wide range of programs and degrees. Decide which province or city you want to study in, and research schools and programs that fit your interests and career goals. Make sure to choose an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Some top universities in Canada include the University of Toronto, McGill University, University of British Columbia, and McMaster University.

Once you’ve selected your preferred school and program, apply directly and make sure you meet all admission requirements. Get accepted before applying for your study permit.

Step 2: Prove You Can Support Yourself Financially

As an international student in Canada, you must prove you can cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other costs. This is a requirement for your study permit application. Determine your expected costs and prepare financial documents showing you have sufficient funds, such as:

  • Proof of income, savings, loans, or scholarships
  • Bank statements and/or letters from a financial institution
  • Proof of paid tuition fees and housing payments
  • Parents’ financial documents if they will support you

In general, you’ll need around CAD $15,000 to $20,000 per year as a minimum. The higher your proof of funds, the better.

Step 3: Apply for Your Study Permit

Once you’ve been accepted to your school, it’s time to apply for your Canadian study permit. This is done online through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). As part of the application, you will need to:

  • Pay the application fee
  • Provide your acceptance letter and proof of financial support
  • Get a medical exam and police certificate
  • Prove your intent to leave Canada after graduating

Processing times for study permits can vary, so apply at least 2 to 3 months in advance of your program start date. Applications within Canada may have shorter processing times.

Step 4: Enter Canada as a Student

You can enter Canada as a student once you receive your study permit approval letter. You will be given a date by which you must enter Canada. At the border, show your approval letter, proof of funds, passport, and any other required documents.

Make sure you register for healthcare coverage once you arrive, as your student insurance won’t kick in immediately. Bring enough day-to-day funds to cover initial expenses as well.

Step 5: Get Your Student Visa and Study Permit

When you enter Canada, the border officers will issue your student visa and study permit. The student visa shows you meet entry requirements, while the study permit allows you to live, study, and work in Canada under student status.

Your study permit will include:

  • Your biographical details
  • The length of your program
  • Expiry date of your permit
  • Any conditions you must meet

Be sure to keep your study permit on hand as you will need to show it for things like campus jobs, off-campus work permits, healthcare, mobile phone plans, and more.
