IELTS Exam Pattern:

You can take your IELTS academic or IELTS general training test either online or offline, i.e., on paper or computer at an official test center.

• Reading: In this section, your reading abilities will be demonstrated, and you have to answer based on the general paragraph, which determines whether you understand the opinions and reasonings. The duration of the reading test is 60 minutes.  
• Writing: The duration of this section is 60 minutes. It will demonstrate your vocabulary, grammar, and ability to organize your thoughts and ideas and write a response.  
• Speaking: In this section, you will demonstrate your speaking ability and how well you can communicate, express, and justify your opinions within the time duration of 10-15 minutes. 
• Listening: The time duration of this section is 30 minutes. This section demonstrates your listening skills, such as how well you understand the opinions and ideas and follow the development of an argument. 

Key Facts of IELTS Academic & General Training:

1. The test length of the IELTS exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
2. There are four sections in the IELTS test, including Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
3. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections take place on the same day with no breaks in between.
4. The Speaking section may be scheduled on the same day or before and after 7 days of other sections that have been conducted.

With Visa Requirements

When you apply for a visa to immigrate abroad, the immigration authorities will ask for your language proficiency skills, and the IELTS test result will prove your language proficiency.

After completing your IELTS test, you will receive an official Test Report Form (TRF), which contains your IELTS test scores.

This TRF report is valid for two years and should be submitted to visa authorities to demonstrate or prove your language skills.

However, each visa and country has its own requirements for IELTS scores. Hence, it is important to go through the requirements carefully before you apply for your visa.

IELTS Requirements for Countries:

Countries like Australia, Canada, the USA, and Europe accept IELTS test results as a means to define your language proficiency. 

Australia

Australian Immigration Authorities will ask for proof of English language proficiency, and IELTS is the most preferred and acceptable language test in Australia. Immigrants, including students and skilled workers, are required to show proof of language proficiency.

Canada

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) accepts IELTS as a means to prove your English language proficiency. Immigration pathways to Canada, like the Express Entry System, require an IELTS test score to determine your English or French language proficiency. 

If you are applying for a student, work, PR, or any other visa category, you will need to provide test score results.

The USA

In the USA, you can increase your chances of a visa application being accepted by demonstrating proof of English language proficiency. 

For example, if you are applying for a student visa, you need to submit your IELTS test score, as it is mandatory for students to submit it along with other necessary documents.  

Europe

IELTS is recognized and respected throughout Europe and is preferred by most universities and employers. It is important for students, skilled workers, and other immigrants to demonstrate their English language proficiency. 

However, an IELTS test is not required in some European countries, and you need to consult with an immigration expert to find a complete list of those countries.

Who Conducts IELTS in India?

The IELTS test for computer-delivered tests is conducted seven days a week and up to three times a day through the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate, and the British Council manages IELTS in India.
