High Demand Occupations in Canada, 2024

Canada allows immigrants from other countries with skills and experience to work in Canada and contribute to its economy. A person can apply for a Canadian permanent resident to live in Canada, and after staying for a certain period they can apply for citizenship in Canada.

Canada provides many benefits to its permanent residents and different pathways for immigration. One of the easiest and fastest pathways for immigration to Canada is Express Entry.

Canada PR

A person who immigrated to Canada via a Canada PR visa is given the status of a permanent resident. A permanent resident can experience many benefits, including working, living, and studying anywhere in Canada except running or voting for any political party, but it differs from Citizenship.

Staying in Canada for three years out of five, an individual became eligible to apply for citizenship.

Various pathways for immigration to Canada are listed below:

Express Entry

The Express Entry system organizes immigrants' applications through different immigration programs. Candidates who are interested submit an online profile, then the federal government decides whether the candidate is eligible.

If the candidate is qualified, the candidate's profile enters the Express Entry pool and is ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) calculator. The CRS calculator ranks applicants against each other in the Express Entry pool.

Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a system developed by the Canadian government. It is a score-based selection system which ranks candidates’ according to their profiles. The government then selects a candidate with high CRS scores.

Express Entry manages three programs:

Federal Skilled Worker Program: This program allows a candidate with foreign experience and skills to work in Canada and apply for permanent residence. In this program, a candidate does not need Canadian experience but must meet the eligibility criteria such as work experience, language ability, and education.

The candidate must score 67 points out of 100. The Federal Skilled Worker Program has its eligibility factors:

  • 1. Language
  • 2. Education
  • 3. Work Experience
  • 4. Age
  • 5. Arranged Employment in Canada
  • 6. Adaptability

Federal Skilled Trades Program: Canada welcomes many immigrants annually through different programs. Half of them are skilled workers received through an economic pathway. For qualified traders, the Federal Skilled Trades Program is appropriate.

To meet the requirements of this program, an applicant must:

  • Have at least two years of experience in skill trades or an equal amount in part-time.
  • The experience must have been obtained within the previous five years.
  • The experience is only considered when an applicant is granted the certification to practice in trade in their country of residence.

Canadian Experience Class: This program is for those with Canadian work experience who want to become permanent residents of Canada. The eligibility criteria for this program are:

  • Canadian Skilled Work experience
  • Language ability
  • Education
  • Admissibility

The National Occupation Classification (NOC) is a nationally acknowledged system that assigns job descriptions and occupation codes to the Canadian Labour Market.

NOC not only assigns or defines the nature of jobs and occupations but also has a remarkable impact on immigrants and helps them navigate their journey.

The classification and categorization of occupations by this system are for statistical, administrative, and research purposes. NOC is maintained by the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and changes according to the Canadian Labour Market.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) helps immigrants by indicating NOC codes that are suitable for them based on their work experience.

Immigrants must have a complete knowledge of NOC codes. If an applicant submits an application indicating a distinct NOC code that does not match their work experience, the chances of their application being rejected are high.

For the purpose of immigration to Canada, a candidate’s actual title of the job is not essential. Instead, the work experience of the candidate should match the lead statement of the NOC and should have performed some of the duties listed in the NOC.

The NOC organizes occupations by assigning immigrants the Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) categories. There are six types of TEER, ranging from TEER 0 to TEER 5.
